I was recently approached by Sailor Jerry to help them come up with a design concept for a potential bungalow located at the Pacific Edge Hotel in Laguna Beach CA. The challenge for the bungalow design was to bring out Sailor Jerry’s brand and Hawaiian background while keeping with the tattoo culture and the overall brand image.
A little back ground for inspiration was given to me to help form the design concept: “Norman ‘Sailor Jerry’ Collins, father of the old-school tattoo was an artist and a craftsman who built his rep tattooing sailors in Honolulu, Hawaii, where he lived most of his life. The freedom and individuality of old-school beach, tiki and surf culture has been baked into our worldview. We have a strong work ethic and an equally strong “shore leave” ethic. Surfboards, motorcycles, hot rods, tattoos, guitars, beach bbq’s – they’re all part of our way of life. And since Jerry tattooed in Hawaii when tiki culture became huge, we made our bungalow a tiki lodge – bringing our island past into our beach present.”
This overall concept shaped the intent for the design I presented to the team. The design is still pending and hopefully this year it will be an addition to the Hotel’s premier day-cation bungalows. The images attached are design concepts starting with the final selected design with previous ideas shown below.
